In medieval Europe Epicurus was regarded as another name for atheists or hedonists. The reason for this is that Epicurus’ philosophy consistently stuck to materialistic and sensualistic position concerning the existence und
knowledge of the external world. This led to the conclusion that Epicurus and his followers were branded as ‘heretics’ through the Middle Ages because Christian doctrines wielded the only absolute authority and Epicurus’ philosophy disagreed with Christian teaching in every aspect. But the decline of scholasticism required a new methodology for the true knowledge of the causes of things. At this time, Epicurus’ sensualistic philosophy revived by French philosopher Pierre Gassendi had a decisive
effect on the development of modern science based on experiments and observations of a phenomenon. In recent years, several scholars harbour doubts about the empirical character of Epicurus’ philosophy when they interpret the meaning of Epicurus’ concepts from a rationalistic perspective. But this attempt does not seem very satisfactory because such a rationalistic approach to Epicurus’ epistemology cannot explain his positivist methodology. The correct interpretation of the position of Epicurus
seems to be that all concepts are formed from the ideas which come through the senses. Although Epicurus’ methodology is indeed naive and simple as of today, nevertheless, it is an undeniable fact that his empirical thought prepared the solid theoretical basis for modern scientific methodology. 키워드열기/닫기 버튼, , , , , Epicureanism, Canonic, Sense Perception, Prolepsis, Theory of Signs, Gassendi 피인용 횟수
